UV light emitted by the Bio-Fighter penetrates the cell walls of the microbe, causing cellular or genetic damage. The microbe dies or is unable to reproduce. Intensity and exposure time will determine how quickly a microbe is killed by UV light. Is UV light safe? There are several bands in the UV light spectrum. UV-C is used to control microbials. UV-C light will damage human tissue as well with enough exposure, and can severely burn the eyes. A glance at a distance may not be a problem. But, looking at one close up for 5-10 seconds could damage the eyes. Generally, your eyes will heal if they are burned. Dust Free recommends that goggles be worn when in the presence of unshielded UV light. Do I still need an air filter? Yes. The Bio-Fighter is designed to be used in addition to a dust filter or electronic air cleaner. Filters are inefficient at dealing with small bacteria and viruses, and are incapable of preventing mold from growing on a surface. The Bio-Fighter solves this problem. Actually a dust filter maintains the efficiency of the Bio-Fighter by keeping its UV tubes clean. Where does it install? The Bio-Fighter installs in your heating and cooling systems ductwork or housing. For the control of airborne microbes, anywhere in the ductwork is fine.
